Retro Print: The Great Outdoors

cam087705This photograph is amazing due to the artifice involved. The photographer combines an Avon cologne bottle of a truck and camper and combines it with a paint by numbers painting as backdrop to form a vignette of classic Americana. The photographer combines two kitschy items from America’s not-so-distant past to make up this picture. Paint by number kits (which are still available) are noted more for the mild amount of enjoyment they give the painter; they are not famous for the art that is the result. Avon’s series of cologne bottles were avidly collected by Avon customers in the 1970s and then, after the cologne was gone, placed on shelves all over America as decorative objects. In hindsight, they were pretty awful, but perhaps what was worse was that we collected them and decorated our homes with them. This object combines the two into a splendid display of artifice. The photograph depicts a scene that could be real, could happen, and has happened countless times in our parks and campgrounds; but the photographer uses models that, through their sheer artificial nature, reveal how false the “camping experience” really is.

In the Flow

flow436This oil painting done on wood with the sides painted black is called In The Flow and is a beautifully done painting. It is unique because it uses colors boldly but at the same time the colors are toned down to look more like earth tones. The painting really does seem to flow from the tree to the city to the people in the water. I love the color set used with dark blue and green tones but also the brighter accents in red, yellow, and orange. I also like the abstract aspect of the painting and that it let’s you think about the painting and how it flows.

Art from the Hand, not the Printer

A long held fascination with robots and robot-like things.

A long held fascination with robots and robot-like things.

Its true, I’m a robot-a-holic. Chances are if it has a metal body and soulless eyes, I will find a place for it in my home (at least mentally). I found this tonight from an artist in Blue Springs, my hometown. My only critique is the size (as she mentions) and possibly the addition of the wording. Still, amazing imagery, JaelAlexandra!

The Sojourn of Blinky

I was watching the recently listed never ending scroll on etsy and this lil’ guy caught my attention. If it weren’t for that third cartoon eye, it would just be another boring fish. Well done flameswithin!

This captures the true essence of Blinky's plight!
